Kate is a relatively new quilter and was very quickly drawn to art quilting because of the opportunities to communicate a message using this medium. She has been particularly interested in projects that commemorate the seasons of life or meaningful life experiences and that reflect aspects of an individual's persona and tell a story. She enjoys making pieces that are edgy, contain surprises, hidden messages and a lot of whimsy and humor. She is challenged by the limitless options available to combine more traditional quilting techniques with a wide range of surface design and embellishment options.

Merely a Migraine Pizza Head
© Kate DeWitt 2004
28¾" x 34½"
For years I have had migraine headaches. As I thought about how to depict a headache I got to thinking about a slice of ones head which led to thinking about a pizza head with the ingredients of a migraine as pizza toppings.
Techniques used: Machine piecing, thread painting, appliqué and quilting: hand embellishment

Genes, Proteins and Cells, Oh My

As I have been working on a series depicting various parts of the human anatomy I kept coming across various images of the various stages of our basic genetic and cellular make up. I think the medical illustrations are beautiful. This is my version of the conversion of DNA to cells.
Techniques used: Machine piecing, machine quilting; machine and hand embellishment.

Bud Has No Balls
© Kate DeWitt 2004
23½"x 30½"
I love baseball but I don’t like impossibly green astroturf, the fact that major league baseball can’t get serious about banning steroid use or the fact that the commissioner of baseball is a puppet of certain baseball owners which prevents Washington from having a major league team.
Techniques used: Machine piecing, appliqué, thread painting and quilting; hand embellishment.
